LET'S IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT (and other catchy tunes)

Neil Young in HEART OF GOLD

Neil Young has a new album coming out Tuesday, titled LIVING WITH WAR. It is getting rave reviews. The song you are going to be hearing a lot of on the radio is little ditty titled Let's Impeach The President. Fox News is calling it the "catchiest" protest song since Country Joe and the Fish's 1966 classic I'M FIXIN TO DIE RAG. The lyrics to the song are:

Let’s impeach the president for lying
And leading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door

He’s the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war

Let’s impeach the president for spying
On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones

What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees
Would New Orleans have been safer that way
Sheltered by our government’s protection
Or was someone just not home that day?

Let’s impeach the president
For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
Dividing our country into colors
And still leaving black people neglected

Thank god he’s cracking down on steroids
Since he sold his old baseball team
There’s lot of people looking at big trouble
But of course the president is clean

If you are a Young fan, you know there are really two Neils. The contemplative, folksy Heart Of Gold and Old Man Neil, and the hard rockin, father of grunge Neil. This album definitely leans toward the latter. The songs rock, and are terrific both musically and lyrically. The album will be released Tuesday, but you can listen to it for free HERE.

My daughter has suddenly become something of a crusader. She has been making her views on global warming known in no uncertain terms, and castigating her relatives and coworkers for their indifference. She is also not bashful about pointing out your stupidity if you happen to mention you don't believe in global warming. Her cousin became the subject of her ire yesterday, much to the delight of her coworkers, as it focused her wrath on someone besides them.

It started a few weeks ago, when she heard a story about how global warming is affecting songbird populations. Then a story about drowning polar bears. The kicker came when she saw the trailer for AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH.

I fear she has been hanging out with her father TOO much. One of her friends told her the other day "you're SUCH a hippie." Like that was a bad thing. Anyhow, I'm proud she has taken an interest in the larger world and politics. She doesn't suffer from her generations biggest disease, indifference.

If you are not checking in on Josh Marshall's TALKING POINTS MEMO at least a couple of times a day, you just aren't keeping up!

For example: How is it that the limosine company in the center of "Hookergate" managed to get a $25 million contract with the Dept. of Homeland Security, in spite of a long record of bad service, bankruptcy, revoked transport licenses, and numerous run ins with the law? Read the story HERE.

Also: The #3 man at the CIA, the official responsible for procurement, is under federal investigation as a part of the Wilkes-Cunningham bribary scandal and may soon be indicted. Story HERE.

And finally: AP: "Prosecutors have e-mails showing Rep. Tom DeLay's office knew lobbyist Jack Abramoff had arranged the financing for the GOP leader's controversial European golfing trip in 2000 and was concerned 'if someone starts asking questions.'"
-- Josh Marshall

These are just a couple hours worth of posts from Saturday. Marshall and Co. keep on top of the news better than anyone in either the MSM or the blogosphere. Guys and gals, TPM really is a must read daily!

Comments:
Thanks dad. I am not getting into global warming just because of song birds and the poor polar bears however. The fact that it has been in the news, friends talking about, and that even cosmo is writing articles about it are a few reasons. I have always been concerned about global warming but people always made it seem like it wasn't a big deal. I think I have just finally reached the point where I now understand that even I make a difference. Now if everyone else could just reach the same ƒ*¢king conclusion there wouldn't be as much of a problem. So let that be known. It wasn't just a couple animals that woke me up. Although I really am a sucker for the poor things! Just not enough to join PETA. Ok thats all I wanted to say. Bye.

GWB,

Good for her. Thankfully, they don't fall far from the tree. I think my son's well on his way too. I can't wait for the day that one of Alex's friends refers to us as a couple of tree-huggin' hippies. It will mean we raised him right.

Yippie (allusion to your hippie comment) for your daughter! This is a problem we (your dad's generation and mine) should been a helluva lot more active in dealing with. Hell, I was taught/warned about global warming in a very intense class called Science and Society in which all these problems were spelled out over the course of the entire year. Oh yeah, this was high school and it was 1978. So what's my excuse...I wasn't loud enough and not dedicated enough. It doesn't help that I was drunk from 1978 until 1990.

And I'm not sure I want to belong to a species that assisted in killing off the polar bears.

Be a crusader. And be a loud one!

Mr White Bear said: I fear she has been hanging out with her father TOO much. One of her friends told her the other day "you're SUCH a hippie." Like that was a bad thing. Anyhow, I'm proud she has taken an interest in the larger world and politics. She doesn't suffer from her generations biggest disease, indifference.

All power to her. The more people that get involved with this the better. Lets just hope that things don't need to get *really* bad before the indifferent ones wake up to the problem too.

Oh, and LOVED the hippy comment!

Ahh, Neil young - a great part of my youth, may well be making it onto my birthday wishlist this year:-)

Well done to Shelley for arguing her corner. If we all stood up& said what we believed in, the world would be a better place.

"Global warming doesn't exist." Ha. I'd LOVE to see some smarmy neocon try to say that while standing near one of those drowning polar bears...

Maybe he'll just dry up and blow away?

WASHINGTON — President Bush's approval rating has slumped to 31% in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll [5/8/06], the lowest of his presidency and a warning sign for Republicans in the November elections.
The survey of 1,013 adults, taken Friday through Sunday, shows Bush's standing down by 3 percentage points in a single week. His disapproval rating also reached a record: 65%. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.

I just want to let Shelley know that being passionate about a worthy cause is totally worth having people annoyed with you.
I know all about it.
:)

Way to go Shelley! Your Dad's and my generation started the ball rolling on ecological concerns. Unfortunately the Yuppies of the 80s dropped the ball and undid a lot of our hard work.
I'm a rabid recycler and get ridiculed a LOT. Don't let it bother you. I think people ridicule us because they have a guilty conscience. ;)

I'm glad you're raising a "hippie" the world needs more of them. I'm half-way there with one vegetarian, animal rights activist, still trying to figure out who my second child will turn out to be. :-) Oh, and my attention was diverted to Darfur for a while, so I am waaaaayyyy behind on other events. I'll go check out what's going on in the rest of the world. Thanks for the update!

I can't wait to hear the new Neil Young songs, so thanks for the link. :)

I really appreciated your post last year about Kent state. That Dtr is something else, wahoo for her! She is right, if only more people realized that we can all make a difference. You are a good pops! I love neil young for his politics, but his other songs depress me to the point of wanting to hang myself, LOL... a friend had sent me 'neil's garage'.. just last weekend,, that's groovy he is doing that..and something neil actualy stuck with, ha!

I have respect for anyone who can stand up for what they believe in. As far as Neil Young, I'm not a huge fan, but I don't disagree with his song. As far as outright disapproval of the president and standing up for what you believe in, have you seen the Stephen Colbert White House Press speech? /cringe

Hey howdy, um did you know there is a Freakonomics bog...warning its really addictive and got great links! I know you said you read it so I thought I'd see how you're doing this fine morning and if you had heard of that site...? It's taught in a few schools too!
